What Does It Mean to Be Saved and Delivered?

Many believers use the words “saved” and “delivered” interchangeably.

But they are not the same.

They are connected—but distinct.

To fully understand your identity and authority in Christ, you must understand both.

What Does It Mean to Be Saved?

Salvation is the foundation of your relationship with God.

In the New Testament, the Greek word for salvation is:

σωτηρία (sōtēria) — meaning:

  • rescue
  • safety
  • preservation
  • deliverance from danger
  • restoration to wholeness

It comes from the root word:

σῴζω (sōzō) — meaning:

  • to save
  • to heal
  • to make whole

This means salvation is not just about going to heaven.

It is about being restored completely—spirit, soul, and body.

The Hebrew Understanding of Salvation

In the Old Testament, salvation is often linked to the word:

יְשׁוּעָה (yeshuah) — meaning:

  • salvation
  • deliverance
  • victory
  • help

This word reveals that salvation includes:

  • rescue from enemies
  • victory in battle
  • divine intervention

Salvation is both spiritual and practical.

What Does It Mean to Be Delivered?

Deliverance is the application of salvation.

It is where what Christ accomplished becomes active in your life.

Greek Word for Deliverance

ῥύομαι (rhuomai) — meaning:

  • to rescue
  • to draw out of danger
  • to snatch away

Colossians 1:13 — “He has delivered us from the power of darkness…”

Hebrew Word for Deliverance

נָצַל (natsal) — meaning:

  • to snatch away
  • to recover
  • to rescue

Deliverance is not passive.

It is God actively removing you from bondage and danger.

The Difference Between Saved and Delivered

Salvation gives you a new position.

Deliverance enforces that position.

  • Salvation = legal standing
  • Deliverance = lived freedom

You can be saved—and still need deliverance in areas like:

  • Fear
  • Addiction
  • Thought patterns
  • Spiritual oppression

Why Many Believers Are Saved but Not Free

Because salvation was received—but not fully understood or applied.

Deliverance requires:

  • Knowledge of truth
  • Renouncing agreement with darkness
  • Replacing lies with the Word

Jesus said in John 8:32:

“You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Walking in Both Salvation and Deliverance

To walk fully in Christ:

  • Receive salvation by faith
  • Pursue deliverance through truth and obedience
  • Build your life on the Word
  • Maintain your freedom through alignment with God

Final Truth

You were not only saved to belong to God.

You were saved to be free.

Freedom is not automatic—it is enforced through truth.

Closing Prayer

Father, I thank You for the gift of salvation and the power of deliverance. I declare that every area of bondage in my life is broken by truth. Where there has been darkness, let there be light. Where there has been limitation, let there be freedom. Establish me fully in the victory Christ has already won. In Jesus’ name, amen.
