The Tragedy of Becoming Familiar With God

Key Scriptures: Mark 6:1–6; Psalm 27:4; Revelation 2:4; Proverbs 1:7

One of the greatest dangers in the Christian life is not rebellion.

It is familiarity.

Familiarity is subtle. It rarely announces itself. It creeps into the heart unnoticed. It causes us to treat holy things as common things. It turns awe into routine and reverence into ritual. Have you ever been there?

Many believers do not lose their relationship with God overnight. Instead, they slowly become familiar with Him. They continue attending church, reading Scripture, and praying, but their wonder begins to fade.

The danger is not that God becomes less glorious.

The danger is that we stop seeing His glory.

The Story

There was once a man named Samuel who had followed Christ faithfully for many years.

Every morning he read his Bible.

Every Sunday he attended church.

Every week he participated in ministry.

To everyone around him, Samuel appeared spiritually healthy.

Yet something had changed.

Prayer had become a routine.

Worship had become predictable.

Scripture had become familiar.

One morning, while reading a passage he had read dozens of times before, Samuel caught himself rushing through the words.

Suddenly, the Holy Spirit whispered:

“You know My words, but do you still marvel at Me?”

The question pierced his heart.

Samuel realized he had become familiar with God’s acts but had stopped pursuing God’s heart.

He knew the stories.

He knew the doctrines.

He knew the verses.

But he had lost the wonder.

That morning he closed his Bible and simply sat before the Lord.

For the first time in a long time, he was not studying for a lesson, preparing a message, or checking off a spiritual duty.

He was simply seeking God.

Tears filled his eyes as he prayed:

“Lord, restore my wonder.”

And God began to do exactly that.

Familiarity Can Blind Us to God

When Jesus returned to Nazareth, the people struggled to receive Him.

Mark 6:3

“Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary…?”

They knew His family.

They knew His history.

They knew where He grew up.

Yet they failed to recognize who stood before them.

Their familiarity became a barrier to revelation.

They saw the carpenter but missed the Christ.

How often do believers do the same?

We become so familiar with church that we miss His presence.

So familiar with Scripture that we stop listening.

So familiar with prayer that we stop expecting answers.

So familiar with God that we cease to stand in awe of Him.

The Fear of the Lord Preserves Wonder

The fear of the Lord is not terror.

It is reverence.

It is recognizing that God is holy, majestic, sovereign, and worthy of worship.

Proverbs 1:7

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.”

Reverence protects us from treating God casually.

The more we understand His greatness, the more our hearts are drawn into worship.

A healthy fear of the Lord keeps wonder alive.

Returning to First Love

The church at Ephesus was praised for many things.

They worked hard.

They endured trials.

They defended truth.

Yet Jesus identified a serious problem.

Revelation 2:4

“Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.”

Notice He did not say they lost their first love.

He said they left it.

Many believers do not intentionally abandon intimacy with God. They simply become distracted, busy, and familiar.

The solution is not more activity.

The solution is returning to Him.

Returning to the place where His presence matters more than performance.

Returning to the place where we seek His face rather than merely His blessings.

How to Break the Spirit of Familiarity

1. Slow Down in God’s Presence

Stop rushing through prayer and Scripture.

Give the Holy Spirit room to speak.

2. Read Scripture With Fresh Eyes

Ask God to reveal new depths and fresh revelation.

The Bible is alive because its Author is alive.

3. Worship Without an Agenda

Spend time worshipping simply because He is worthy.

4. Remember His Faithfulness

Reflect on prayers He has answered and miracles He has performed in your life.

Gratitude fuels wonder.

5. Pursue His Presence Daily

Never allow yesterday’s encounter to replace today’s pursuit.

Conclusion

The greatest threat to intimacy with God is often not opposition from the world but familiarity within the heart.

God has not become ordinary.

His presence is still glorious.

His Word is still alive.

His voice still speaks.

His Spirit still moves.

The question is whether we have allowed routine to dull our sense of wonder.

May we never become so familiar with God that we stop being amazed by Him.

May our hearts continually cry:

“Lord, reveal Yourself to me again.”

For those who keep seeking Him will always discover there is more of Him to know.

Prayer

Father, forgive me for every way I have allowed familiarity to replace wonder. Restore my first love. Renew my hunger for Your presence. Let Your Word become alive to me again. Open my eyes to Your beauty, Your holiness, and Your majesty. Keep my heart tender and reverent before You. May I never treat Your presence as common, but always treasure the privilege of knowing You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
