What It Means to Truly Die to the Flesh: A Biblical Guide to Spiritual Victory

What It Means to Truly Die to the Flesh

The call to follow Christ is not merely a call to believe—it is a call to die. This is one of the most misunderstood yet foundational truths in the Christian walk. Many desire the power of God, the promises of God, and the blessings of God, but resist the process that leads to them: death to the flesh.

This means giving up your personal dreams, your own plans and doing it the way God desires.

I remember a testimony from Patience Museveni Rwabwogo, daughter of Uganandan President Yoweri Museveni as she spoke about studying to become a lawyer when God told her that was not what he wanted her to do. She had already dedicated her heart to Him and wanted nothing more than to serve Him. Yet this was a tough request. But after seeking God for confirmation, she ended that study and today is one of the most humble, respected, yet effective pastors in the entire nation.

To truly live in the Spirit, the flesh must lose its authority.

Understanding the Flesh from a Biblical Perspective

The “flesh” is not simply the physical body. Scripture uses the term to describe the fallen human nature—our natural inclinations that oppose God. It is the part of us that resists submission, seeks self-glory, and prioritizes personal desire over divine will.

Every human is made of three (3) components — Body, soul and Spirit. The spirit is that part of us that connects and hears from God. This the flesh must be under subjection to the Spirit if we are to be truly led by God.

Galatians 5:17 declares, “For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other.”

This means there is a constant internal battle. You cannot walk fully in the Spirit while allowing the flesh to remain in control.

What Does It Mean to Die to the Flesh?

To die to the flesh means to intentionally and consistently deny the control of your natural desires, emotions, and impulses when they conflict with God’s Word and His Spirit.

It is not about suppressing yourself—it is about surrendering yourself.

Jesus said in Luke 9:23, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”

Dying to the flesh is a daily decision. It is not a one-time event but a continual posture of yielding to God.

Signs You Are Still Walking in the Flesh

Many believers assume they have died to the flesh, but their fruit reveals otherwise. The flesh manifests in subtle but destructive ways:

  • Easily offended and unwilling to forgive
  • Driven by pride, recognition, or validation (this is especially important for leaders to watch for in themselves)
  • Controlled by emotions rather than truth
  • Resistant to correction or authority
  • Inconsistent in obedience to God

Galatians 5:19–21 outlines the works of the flesh clearly, showing that anything outside of God’s nature originates from the flesh.

The Process of Dying: It Is Costly

Dying to the flesh is not comfortable. It requires sacrifice, discipline, and a willingness to let go of your own will.

The greatest example is Jesus Christ Himself. Though sinless, He demonstrated complete surrender.

Philippians 2:8 says, “And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”

If Christ, who was without sin, embraced death in obedience, how much more must we embrace death to self? Look at it, we are not called to suffer and die physically as He was, therefore, our requirement is far less than what He sacrificed for us. Yet, He is there right by our sides helping us as we give up being led by our flesh. We were not there for Him!

Crucifying the Flesh: Your Responsibility

Scripture is clear that this is not something God will do for you—you must participate in the process.

Galatians 5:24 states, “And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.”

To crucify the flesh means:

  • Choosing obedience when it is inconvenient
  • Rejecting sinful thoughts before they take root
  • Submitting your desires to the authority of the Word
  • Aligning your actions with the Spirit, not your feelings

This is intentional warfare. The flesh does not die passively—it must be put to death.

The Role of the Holy Spirit in This Process

You cannot die to the flesh through willpower alone. The Holy Spirit empowers you to overcome.

Romans 8:13 declares, “For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.”

Notice the partnership: you mortify (put to death), but it is through the Spirit.

The Spirit gives you conviction, strength, and the ability to choose righteousness over sin.

What Happens When You Truly Die to the Flesh?

When the flesh loses its grip, several things begin to happen:

  • You become more sensitive to God’s voice
  • Your reactions shift from emotional to spiritual
  • You walk in greater authority and clarity
  • The fruit of the Spirit becomes evident in your life
  • You experience deeper intimacy with God

Dying to the flesh is not loss—it is transformation.

John 12:24 says, “Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abides alone: but if it die, it brings forth much fruit.”

Your death produces fruit. Your surrender releases life.

The Danger of Refusing to Die

A believer who refuses to die to the flesh will remain spiritually immature and limited.

The flesh blocks:

  • Spiritual growth
  • Discernment
  • Authority in prayer
  • Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit

Romans 8:6 warns, “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”

You cannot carry both the flesh and the fullness of the Spirit at the same time.

Practical Ways to Die to the Flesh Daily

Dying to the flesh must be lived out practically. It is not just a concept—it is a lifestyle.

  • Spend consistent time in the Word to renew your mind
  • Pray daily for strength to yield to the Spirit
  • Fast to discipline your body and desires
  • Guard your thoughts and reject what is not from God
  • Surround yourself with accountability and godly counsel
  • Obey God immediately, even when it is uncomfortable

Consistency is what weakens the flesh and strengthens the Spirit.

Conclusion: Death Is the Gateway to True Life

The kingdom of God operates on a paradox: death leads to life.

To truly die to the flesh is to relinquish control, surrender your will, and allow Christ to live fully through you.

Galatians 2:20 captures this reality: “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me.”

This is the ultimate goal—not self-improvement, but divine transformation.

When the flesh dies, Christ is revealed.
