In The Secret Place — Dr. Jasmin Brown

Psalm 91 is pretty clear — If we dwell with God on a one and one basis, He rewards us… plain and simple! What does it say?:

91 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

God Wants Us To Join Him In The Secret Place

Dr. Jasmin Brown, Bishop, and Overseer of the New United Bibleway Church Of God in Jamaica and the United States says, it is very important to spend quality time in the presence of the Lord. When you do, you will never leave the same. She explains the results of being in the Secret Place with God through four benefits.

#1. Genuine Brokenness

(Psalm 51:17)

“No one can have an encounter with God in the Secret Place and still be the same!,” Dr. Brown says. “There are things that God cannot allow you to go back with once you leave the Secret Place.”

She explains that you can know you have met God by the damage done to your flesh.

“In the Secret Place, God does not look at your ministry, at sermons you preached, your gifts, etc,” she notes. “He looks at your brokenness. Some people are filled with pride — they do not display the spirit of humility. But brokenness is a sign of humility.”

She says The reason God loved David is that he would always go to God in humility. David was far from perfect, but he would always run back to God in brokenness in the Secret Place. The Secret Place is a personal encounter with God. When you go there you need to go there as a child of God — not as a bishop, not as a pastor, not as a minister — do not go with titles. Just go as a child of God.

God Wants Us To Come To Him Broken

God says:  “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14. It will take men and women who understand what it means to be broken to last.

You have to be sincere to be broken.

“The applause of men is a weapon of mass destruction. You can destroy yourself by taking God’s glory!” Dr. Brown said.

“God cannot use you when you are in self. You have to reach a point where you say, ‘Lord I need thee every hour I need thee…’. To be at a place where you say, ‘Take my life and consecrate it Lord to thee…’. He can only use us when we are out of our flesh.”

The Secret Place Is Not About Title

Brokenness takes away pride and lust. It brings us into the presence of God. As Psalm 51:17 says — “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise.” No need to beat yourself up, He knows what you did — just go to Him in brokenness. He will forgive.

Bow before Him in brokenness. As Psalm  139:7-12 says “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. 9If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. 11If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me, and the light become night around me,” 12even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

Pride, lust, unforgiveness, envy, jealousy, doubts, not being humble, fear … are all works of the flesh that needs to be killed in the Secret Place. If you have an encounter in the Secret Place you will walk with a spiritual limp. You will walk in humbleness.

God Wants Us To Be Humble Before Him

We sing the song ‘brokenness is what I Long for. Brokenness is what I Need. Take my heart conform it….’ Sometimes He breaks us before He blesses us. So that when He blesses us, we will give Him the adoration and the praise. God is taking you through a process.

#2. Mercy of God

(Psalm 86:50)

In the Secret Place, we pray for His mercy to be upon our lives.

“People may think you are guilty when you are crying out for mercy, but it doesn’t always have to do with sin,” she says.

Psalm 86:50 — For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.” Mercy is the language of champions. It is the Lord’s mercy why we are not consumed by frustration, by depression by warfare, etc.

We Find Mercy In The Secret Place

Lamentation 3:22 – “Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not.”

Psalm 25:7 — “Do not remember the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions; According to Your mercy remember me, For Your goodness’ sake, O LORD.”

“Had it not been for mercy in the different areas of our lives — marriage, children, jobs, sickness — we would not make it. It is the mercy of God why we are not consumed. Do not be afraid to ask God for mercy in the Secret Place. The Secret Place is a place of mercy and God meets with men at the place of mercy,” Dr. Brown notes.

Psalm 25:6 — “Remember, O LORD, Your tender mercies and Your loving kindnesses, For they are from of old.”

God looks down on us with compassion. So that in spite of our situation we can still rise above our circumstances. His mercies are new every morning. Today’s mercy is different from tomorrow’s mercies.

God Looks Down On Us With Compassion

Mercy means compassion — forgiveness is shown to one who deserves to be punished. We deserve the punishment, but his mercy pulls us away from that punishment. Grace gives us what we do not deserve to receive — the unmerited favor of God. But mercy pulls us away from punishment.

#3. Spiritual illumination

(1 John 2:27)

In the Secret Place, you have spiritual illumination. The entrance of God’s words brings light. God shines light in our darkness. You not only access spiritual illumination in a bible study but in the Secret Place. If we need revelation or direction for whatever we are faced with, we need to go to the Secret Place.

Daniel stayed in the Secret Place seeking the meaning of dreams and it was revealed to him.

In The Secret Place, You Have Spiritual Illumination

If there are things you are seeking answers to — you got to get in the Secret Place. Moses had to get in the Secret Place. You don’t just get illumination by listening to somebody else speaks. You have to get it in the Secret Place. You will get light shed on that darkness in the Secret Place. You will not get revelation and genuine encounter until you come into the Secret Place.

A lack of genuine illumination will bring confusion. But when you come into the Secret Place and the light comes and shines unto that darkness that you cannot seem to get a breakthrough for, you will see the light shine into your Spirit, and you will be able to get the revelation in the Secret Place.

“That light can only be found in the Secret Place,” Dr. Brown encourages. “Spend time at Jesus’s feet and you will get the answers. Ask God to shine light as to why you are going through what you are going through, then you can take the battle back to the gate.”

#4. Genuine Empowerment

(Jeremiah 1:5)

The Secret Place is a place of empowerment. The oil and wine, grace, power, spirit, and genuine empowerment can be found in the Secret Place. Whatever assignment God has called you to do, you need to seek empowerment in the Secret Place.

God is preparing you for that assignment, and where he is preparing to take you will be revealed when you seek him.

“Don’t waste your downtime and your down days. Use it to spend time in the Secret Place,” the Bishop encourages. “You may not be able to find that oil of the spirit for that anointing unless you go to the Secret Place. God wants those who are called to seek Him. God wants us to value Him enough to seek Him,” she says. “Everything that is glorious is hidden in God. Somethings will never be revealed to us until we seek Him. It pleases God to reveal His secrets to his servants. There are mysteries covered for ages that God wants to reveal to us.”

The Secret Place is a place alone with God. The way into his pavilion is so hollow that you cannot go with your mother, father, brother, sister — it’s a journey you have to go alone!

You cannot get into the presence of the Lord and your flesh is not damaged. The flesh must be crucified! We must first deny ourselves and follow Him. The flesh must die. You have to be willing to deny self.

“God will teach us the mystery of the Secret Place and our lives will not be the same. There are secret things of God that we need to learn. We have to know Him better to experience Him like never before. When you are in the Secret Place you have that guarantee. Everything that is glorious is hidden — this can only be revealed as we seek Him in the Secret Place!” Dr. Brown encourages.
