Who Is Jesus? A Deep Dive Beyond the Basics

Meeting Christ at the Altar

“Who is Jesus?”

It is one of the most searched spiritual questions in the world. Some know Him as a prophet. Others call Him a teacher. Some see Him as a historical figure. But Scripture reveals something far deeper.

Jesus is not merely a person to study.

He is a Person to encounter.

And the place of encounter has always been the altar.

Jesus Is the Son of God

The Bible declares clearly:

“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” — Matthew 3:17

Jesus is not just a messenger of God — He is the Son of God. He carries divine authority, divine nature, and divine identity.

John 1:14 says:

“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”

Jesus is God revealed in human form — not distant, but near.

Jesus Is Savior

The name “Jesus” means “The Lord saves” or “Saviour”

Humanity’s greatest problem is not political, financial, or social — it is sin. Sin separates us from God. Jesus came to bridge that separation.

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” — Luke 19:10

He did not come merely to inspire.

He came to rescue.

And rescue required sacrifice.

Jesus Is the Final Sacrifice on the Altar

Throughout the Old Testament, altars were places of sacrifice. Animals were offered as temporary coverings for sin.

But those sacrifices were shadows.

Jesus became the fulfillment.

“Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” — John 1:29

The cross became the ultimate altar.

On that altar:

  • Justice was satisfied
  • Mercy was released
  • Separation was broken
  • Redemption was secured

Jesus was not a victim.

He was the willing offering.

Unlike Old Testament sacrifices that had to be repeated, His sacrifice was once and for all.

Jesus Is Lord

Many accept Jesus as Savior but struggle with Him as Lord.

Savior rescues you.

Lord governs you.

Philippians 2:9–11 declares that every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

To call Him Lord means:

  • Surrendering control
  • Aligning your life with His Word
  • Yielding your will at the altar

The altar is not only where Jesus died for you.

It is where you die to self for Him.

Jesus Is High Priest

Here is where it becomes deeply personal.

Jesus is not only the sacrifice — He is also the High Priest.

“We have a great High Priest… Jesus the Son of God.” — Hebrews 4:14

In the Old Testament, priests stood between God and people. Today, Jesus stands as our mediator.

When you pray, you are not speaking into the air.

You are approaching the throne through Christ.

At the altar of prayer, He intercedes for you.

Jesus Is the Way, the Truth, and the Life

Jesus did not say He shows the way.

He said:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” — John 14:6

That statement is exclusive. It is bold. It is foundational.

Christianity is not built on principles.

It is built on a Person.

Without Jesus, there is no access to the Father.

Without Jesus, there is no eternal life.

But through Him, the altar is always open.

Who Is Jesus to You?

This is where information becomes transformation.

You can know theology and still not know Him.

The altar demands response.

Peter once declared:

“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” — Matthew 16:16

But later, Peter also had to surrender his fear, pride, and ambition.

Jesus is:

  • Savior — but have you received Him?
  • Lord — but have you surrendered to Him?
  • Sacrifice — but have you accepted His covering?
  • High Priest — but do you approach God through Him?

The altar is where identity becomes personal.

Meeting Jesus at the Altar Today

You do not need a physical stone altar.

Your altar can be:

  • A quiet room
  • A chair beside your bed
  • A journal moment
  • A worship space
  • A surrendered heart

When you bow in repentance, that is an altar.

When you say “not my will,” that is an altar.

When you forgive someone who hurt you, that is an altar.

When you give Him your life fully, that is an altar.

Jesus is not waiting to be analyzed.

He is waiting to be received.

A Prayer to Meet Jesus

Lord Jesus,

I acknowledge You as the Son of God and Savior of the world.

I receive Your sacrifice made on the cross.

I surrender my will at Your altar.

Be Lord of my life.

Teach me to walk with You daily.

Amen.

Final Reflection

Who is Jesus?

He is:

  • God revealed
  • Savior crucified
  • Lord exalted
  • High Priest interceding
  • King returning

But above all —

He is the One who meets you at the altar.

And when you truly meet Him, you never remain the same.
