The Importance of Being a Person of the Word

Why Every Believer Must Be Rooted in Scripture

In today’s generation of prophetic voices, powerful worship, and spiritual encounters, there is one truth that must never be neglected: a believer must be a person of the Word.

Many people seek miracles, prophetic insight, or spiritual experiences. Yet the foundation of a strong Christian life has always been the same — the Word of God.

The altar may be where we encounter God, but the Word is what teaches us how to remain aligned with Him.

The Word Is the Foundation of Spiritual Stability

A person who is not grounded in Scripture can easily be misled. Feelings change. Circumstances shift. Opinions fluctuate. But the Word of God remains constant.

Jesus illustrated this in Matthew 7:24–25:

“Everyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

The storms of life come to everyone. The difference between collapse and stability is foundation.

Being a person of the Word means your life is built on something unshakable.

The Word Protects You From Deception

One of the greatest dangers in the modern church is spiritual deception. Not everything that sounds spiritual is biblical.

This is why believers must know the Word for themselves.

Acts 17:11 praises the Bereans because they examined the Scriptures daily to verify what they were hearing.

Being a person of the Word means:

  • You test teachings against Scripture.
  • You are not easily swayed by trends.
  • You remain anchored in truth.

Prophetic voices and spiritual leaders are gifts to the church, but Scripture remains the final authority.

The Word Renews the Mind

Transformation does not happen merely through emotional moments in church services. It happens through consistent renewal of the mind.

Romans 12:2 says:

“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

The Word reshapes how we think, respond, and live.

Without Scripture:

  • Fear dominates thinking.
  • Culture defines morality.
  • Feelings govern decisions.

But when the Word becomes part of you, your thinking begins to align with heaven.

The Word Strengthens Your Authority in Spiritual Warfare

Jesus Himself demonstrated the power of the Word during spiritual battle.

When tempted in the wilderness, He responded repeatedly with the same phrase:

“It is written.” — Matthew 4:4

Notice that Jesus did not argue with the enemy. He responded with Scripture.

The Word is both shield and sword in spiritual warfare.

When you are a person of the Word:

  • You recognize the enemy’s lies.
  • You speak truth with authority.
  • You stand firm in faith.

The Word equips believers to fight from victory, not fear.

The Word Deepens Your Relationship With God

Some people approach Scripture only for information. But the Word was never meant to be merely studied — it was meant to be encountered.

John 1:1 declares:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

The Word reveals God’s heart, His character, and His ways.

When you become a person of the Word, Scripture stops being a book you read occasionally. It becomes the voice that guides your life.

The Altar and the Word Work Together

On God’s Altar, believers pray, surrender, and encounter the presence of God.

But the Word teaches us how to live after the altar experience.

The altar produces surrender.

The Word produces alignment.

Without the Word, altar moments can become emotional experiences that fade.

With the Word, those moments become lifelong transformation.

Joshua 1:8 gives a powerful instruction:

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night.”

Meditation on Scripture keeps the heart connected to God long after the prayer moment ends.

What It Means to Be a Person of the Word

Being a person of the Word is not about reading a verse occasionally. It is a lifestyle.

A person of the Word:

  • Reads Scripture consistently
  • Meditates on it deeply
  • Applies it practically
  • Speaks it boldly
  • Lives it daily

The Word shapes their decisions, relationships, and responses.

It becomes the compass that guides every step.

How to Grow as a Person of the Word

If you desire to become rooted in Scripture, start with simple but consistent steps:

1. Read the Bible daily

Even a few verses consistently can change your spiritual life. When you read, look up the meanings of the words (even the Greek and Hebrew meanings) so that you know exactly what the passage is saying to you without assumption.

2. Reflect on what you read

Ask: What is God teaching me through this passage?

3. Apply it to your life

Transformation happens when Scripture becomes practice.

4. Speak the Word aloud

Declaring Scripture strengthens faith.

5. Return to the altar regularly

Prayer and the Word together create deep spiritual growth. Gradually you become a person of spiritual substance that the enemy fears instead of you fearing the enemy. Eventually you don’t even have to rebuke the enemy by speaking, instead, he sees the Word in you and flees.

A Prayer to Become a Person of the Word

Father,

Give me a hunger for Your Word.

Let Scripture shape my thoughts, my choices, and my character.

Teach me to meditate on Your truth day and night.

May Your Word guide my life and anchor my faith.

As I come to Your altar, let Your Word transform me.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Final Reflection

Spiritual encounters are powerful.

Prophetic insight is valuable.

But the believer who endures is the believer who is rooted in the Word.

The altar may ignite the fire.

But the Word keeps the fire burning.

When you become a person of the Word, your faith becomes steady, your discernment sharpens, and your walk with God deepens.

And your life becomes a living testimony of God’s truth.
