Not all dreams that appear negative should be rejected. Sometimes they are a warning from God to show what is happening to us that we would otherwise not be aware of. However, the enemy can come to plant seeds in our minds even as we sleep, making it difficult for us to understand the action plan. Here is a guide on how to discern the source of the messenge.
Step 1: Identify the Emotional Fruit of the Dream
The emotional outcome of a dream is a major indicator of its source.
- God-origin dreams often produce conviction, clarity, peace, urgency, or instruction—even when serious.
- Enemy-origin dreams often produce fear, confusion, shame, heaviness, lust, or anxiety.
“God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.” (1 Corinthians 14:33)
If the dream leaves you fearful and powerless, it likely requires prayerful confrontation, not passive reflection.
Step 2: Examine the Content Through Scripture
Dreams must be interpreted through the Word of God, not emotion or superstition.
Ask:
- Does this dream align with biblical truth?
- Does it push me toward God or away from Him?
- Does it confirm Scripture or contradict it?
God will never instruct you through dreams to violate His Word.
Any dream that contradicts Scripture is not from God, regardless of how vivid it feels.
Step 3: Recognize Common Dream Symbols (Biblical Lens)
Warning / God-Given Dreams May Include:
- Light, elevation, clarity
- Open doors or closed doors
- Directional movement (travel, paths)
- Angels or instruction without fear
Attack / Enemy Dreams May Include:
- Being chased or attacked
- Sexual encounters or nudity
- Eating strange food
- Falling, drowning, or paralysis
- Returning repeatedly to old locations
These symbols do not automatically condemn you—but they require response.
Step 4: Watch for Repetition
Repetitive dreams often signal:
- unresolved spiritual matters
- active spiritual resistance
- generational influence
- ignored warnings
“The dream was repeated… because the thing is established by God.” (Genesis 41:32)
Repetition increases urgency, not fear.
Step 5: Determine the Required Response
Not every dream requires interpretation—but many require action.
- God’s warning dreams → prayer, wisdom, obedience
- Enemy attack dreams → cancellation, repentance, warfare
- Neutral dreams → no action required
When in doubt, pray:
“Lord, show me what You are saying—and what You want me to do.”
Step 6: Cancel What Is Not From God
If a dream carries fear, pollution, or bondage, do not analyze it endlessly.
Instead:
- Renounce it verbally
- Apply the blood of Jesus
- Declare the opposite outcome
- Command your night seasons to be guarded
“Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven.” (Matthew 18:18)
Step 7: Steward God-Given Dreams
For dreams from God:
- Write them down
- Pray over them
- Ask for confirmation
- Wait for timing
Revelation grows when it is honored, not rushed.
