The 8 Prayer Watches: What to Pray During Each Watch

Prayer does not have to be complicated.

There are times when you simply want to know: What watch am I in right now, and what should I be praying about?

The eight prayer watches divide the 24-hour day into eight three-hour periods. Scripture records people praying, worshipping, receiving revelation, experiencing deliverance, and encountering God at different hours of the day and night.

This guide is designed as a quick reference. Go directly to the watch you are in, see its major prayer focus, and begin praying.

A Simple Way to Use the Prayer Watches

You do not have to pray for three continuous hours simply because a watch lasts three hours. The watches can serve as prayer markers.

When you wake at midnight, find yourself praying at 5:00 AM, or feel prompted to pray at 3:00 PM, you can identify the watch and use these prayer points as a guide.

The power is not in the clock. The power is in God.

Prayer watches should never become superstition, ritual, or the belief that God can only answer particular prayers at particular hours. Scripture calls believers to pray continually (1 Thessalonians 5:17). The watches simply provide a framework that can help bring order, intentionality, and focus to our prayer lives.
